Ask About Low-Income Housing

Ask in plain words, and use made-up details. Gemma 4 answers on our own server in Google Cloud (Google’s Gemini API steps in if it’s busy). We remove SSNs, card and account numbers, email addresses and phone numbers first, but not names or street addresses. Clear Home doesn’t save it.

How Qualifying Works

Most programs compare your income to the area median income (AMI). Each sets its own limits.

1. Know Your Income

Add up everyone's yearly income in your home before taxes. Programs compare it to a percentage of AMI for your household size, such as 30%, 50%, 60% or 80%.

2. Gather Documents

Programs usually ask for:

  • Photo ID for adults
  • Social Security or immigration documents for household members
  • Proof of income (pay stubs, benefit letters)
  • Your current lease or any eviction notice

3. Apply Where You Live

Vouchers and most rent help are run by your county or city. Apply in each place you'd consider living, and keep your contact details current so you don't lose your spot on a waitlist.

Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8)

A voucher helps pay rent in a private apartment. You usually pay about 30% of your income and the voucher covers the rest. Income generally must be at or below 50% of AMI. Waitlists open rarely, so check often.

Income-Restricted Apartments

Some buildings set aside apartments at lower rents for households under an income limit, often 50% or 60% of AMI. You apply directly with the building's leasing office.

Public Housing

Apartments owned or managed by a housing authority, with rent based on income. In Northern Virginia, Alexandria's housing authority runs public housing.

Emergency Rent Help

If you're behind on rent or facing eviction, your county's human services office and local nonprofits may help with back rent. Legal aid can help you understand your rights.
